I am giving the book 4-1/2 stars for several reasons.First, let me say that for an independent book it is very good, well written and edited well. I like the diary format using dates instead of chapters. The dialogue, which would not be in a diary, is a nice touch. It always appears in just the right places, adding a dimension to the story in appropriate way.
One cannot help but come away from this story with an immense sense of dismay. Power does corrupt, indeed. But it can also do a lot of damage before it is reined in. Such is the case here.
Mr. Neal writes in a very engaging style and does a wonderful job of being concise with emotions that often run amok in other memoirs. In doing this he captures the moment well without overwhelming. This allows the reader to think about what is going on, instead of just being told, becoming more sympathetic. At least that is what happened to me.
I stop just shy of 5 stars because the book needs just a bit of polish. I hope an editor at a publishing house will pick up the book. I don't want to "kill the messenger" because this author is bringing a subject to the public that is difficult and needs to be discussed.
This book was not what I expected it to be either! I don't want to give too much away but oh my, what a roller lasted experience this man lived through. Once you get into the story, and you must read to past the beginning (which is essential to set the stage) you will join him on this outrageous tale (based on true story) of bureaucracy gone amok.
The book ends at just over 300 pages, leaving me wanting to know what happens to Pressley. I hope there are plans for further installments.
I recently reviewed this book for a magazine. The story has haunted me so much that I have just ordered 3 copies of the paperback to give to friends.
